However, as any seasoned candle owner knows, it can be tricky to keep your candles from burning out too quickly. Here are a few great ways to keep your candles burning longer so that you can enjoy your favorite scents for a long time while reducing spending.
Burn a new candle for longer than a few minutes.
Guilty of trying out new candles and then immediately blowing out the flame? Break this habit if you want your candles to last. When you buy a new candle and decide to light it for the first time, you should allow it to form a complete pool of melted wax across the surface of its container, from rim to rim. This will prevent the “tunneling” effect that happens when only the center of the candle burns down, therefore shortening the life of your candle.
Trim those wicks.
Before you light your candles, take a moment to inspect the wicks. Long or crooked wicks can result in uneven burning and bursts of high flames or smoking. Avoid this potential fire hazard while ensuring your candle burns smoothly and brightly by trimming your wicks when needed. Wicks should be about one-fourth-inch high for best burning; don’t trim them lower than that.
Keep the wax pool clear.
Wax can attract all types of things when hot – pet hair, dirt, and dust, to name a few. Not to mention, many wicks can fall in on themselves, if you aren’t taking care of trimming them. Though you might not think it a big deal, having debris in your candle’s wax pool interferes with the chemistry of the candle and may cause it to burn unevenly. You could also notice a lack of scent, which happens when the wick is clogged and can’t draw up the candle’s fragrant oils.
